**New Delhi, India** – New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon today threw his country’s support behind India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, highlighting India’s crucial role in a multipolar Indo-Pacific. Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue, alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Luxon emphasized the need for a rules-based order in the region, rejecting the notion of “might makes right” amidst growing regional tensions.
Luxon lauded India’s growing global influence and strategic importance, stating that its size and geopolitical heft provide it with significant autonomy. He underscored New Zealand’s commitment to working with India to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific, free from external interference and dominated by no single nation.
The New Zealand Prime Minister detailed his country’s approach to the Indo-Pacific, outlining plans to strengthen partnerships with key players, including India, and boost capacity building initiatives within the Pacific Islands to ensure independent decision-making. He highlighted the Quad as a vital mechanism for promoting a stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific, praising India’s contribution to the group while confirming New Zealand’s intention to collaborate on Quad initiatives without formally joining.
Furthermore, Luxon announced an increase in defense cooperation with like-minded nations, including India, and praised ASEAN’s role in fostering regional peace and economic development.
In a joint statement following their bilateral meeting, Prime Ministers Modi and Luxon reaffirmed their commitment to an open, inclusive, and stable Indo-Pacific, upholding the rules-based international order, freedom of navigation, and peaceful dispute resolution in accordance with international law. Both leaders stressed the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity.
