Mon Mar 17 17:49:19 UTC 2025: ## China Urges De-escalation in Red Sea After Houthi Attacks on US Carrier
**Beijing, March 18, 2025** – China has called for dialogue and de-escalation in the Red Sea following claims by Yemen’s Houthi rebels of two separate attacks on a US aircraft carrier group within 24 hours. The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, stated the attacks were retaliation for deadly US strikes on Yemen.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning reiterated China’s opposition to any actions escalating the situation. She emphasized the need for dialogue and negotiation to resolve the complex issues surrounding the Red Sea and the conflict in Yemen.
The US has vowed to continue its strikes until the Houthis cease attacking Red Sea shipping, with President Trump issuing a warning of overwhelming force. The Houthis launched a reported 18 missiles and a drone in their initial attack on the USS Harry Truman and accompanying vessels. Hours later, they claimed a second wave of attacks.
China, whose trade with the European Union heavily relies on Red Sea shipping lanes, previously called for an end to the harassment of civilian vessels in the region last year. The ongoing conflict raises significant concerns about regional stability and international trade.
