Mon Mar 17 17:39:07 UTC 2025: ## Telangana Assembly Passes Bill Increasing BC Reservations to 42%

**Hyderabad, March 18, 2025** – The Telangana Assembly passed a bill on Monday, March 17, increasing reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies to 42%. Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar expressed gratitude for the bill’s passage and addressed concerns regarding the 50% reservation cap. He cited the 103rd Constitutional Amendment of 2019, which allows for reservations beyond this limit for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), as precedent. Minister Prabhakar pointed to Tamil Nadu’s successful implementation of 68% reservations as further justification.

The Minister assured that a dedicated commission and a BC commission have been established to ensure smooth implementation and address any legal challenges. A comprehensive survey, involving one enumerator for every 150 households, informed the proposed increase.

Mr. Prabhakar expressed confidence that the bill will receive parliamentary approval and called for a united front from all political parties to support its passage in Delhi. He lauded the Chief Minister’s leadership in this initiative and expressed hope that Telangana’s model will be adopted nationwide.
