Mon Mar 17 16:53:37 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru to Invest ₹500 Crore in Rural Development Following Waste Dumping Protests
**Bengaluru, March 18, 2025** – Following protests by residents of Mittaganahalli and Kannur villages over the dumping of Bengaluru’s waste in the Mittaganahalli quarry pit, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced a ₹500 crore rural development initiative for the affected areas. The funds, allocated in the last budget, will be used for various development projects.
The announcement comes after days of controversy surrounding allegations of blackmail by some MLAs demanding ₹800 crore for their constituencies in exchange for allowing waste dumping.
A major concern has been the accumulation of 275 crore litres of leachate, a contaminated liquid from decomposing waste, at the Mittaganahalli landfill. To address this, the BBMP has issued a tender for leachate treatment, with plans for a new 2,000 KLD treatment plant costing ₹474 crore. Currently, two smaller plants are operational. The entire leachate treatment project is expected to be completed within three to four years.
Chief Civic Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath stated that the development projects and leachate treatment plans have resolved the conflict with villagers, and waste dumping operations have resumed, albeit currently at night. The BBMP is working to facilitate daytime disposal as well. The district panchayat CEO will visit the area to further address concerns and streamline waste disposal.
