**New Delhi, March 18, 2025** – A 43-year-old worker died and two others were injured after inhaling toxic fumes while cleaning a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) sewer in New Friends Colony on Sunday. The deceased, identified as Panth Lal Chandra, and the injured, Ramkishan Chandra (35) and Shiv Das (25), were found unconscious and rushed to a hospital. While the two injured remain under treatment, Chandra succumbed to his injuries.

Police have registered a case under culpable homicide not amounting to murder, along with violations of the Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, for the unauthorized entry and employment of manual scavengers. The DJB claims the three men were not their employees and that no authorized sewer cleaning was underway at the time of the incident. However, the DJB has also written to the police seeking action against those responsible. The incident has raised concerns about the continued use of manual scavenging despite legal prohibitions.
