Mon Mar 17 14:15:10 UTC 2025: ## Coimbatore to Get 75 Electric Buses, Two Charging Stations Planned

**COIMBATORE, March 17, 2025** – Coimbatore is set to receive 75 electric buses as part of the Tamil Nadu government’s initiative to modernize public transport. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) Coimbatore Region has identified the need for two charging stations, to be located at Ondipudur and Sungam depots. These buses, funded under the 2025-26 State Budget, will primarily serve city routes due to the limited range of electric vehicles.

The project aligns with the larger goal of deploying 950 electric buses in Chennai, 75 in Coimbatore, and 100 in Madurai. Funding is secured through a financing agreement with Germany’s Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) for the climate-friendly modernization program. The TNSTC will contract an operator to manage the services without any increase in manpower.

This initiative is part of the national PM e-Bus Sewa scheme, which aims to deploy over 38,000 electric buses across India and provides payment security for operators. The Ministry of Power’s guidelines on EV charging infrastructure will guide the development of the Coimbatore charging stations. Further support comes from other ministries, including the Ministry of Finance (reducing GST on EVs) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (issuing green license plates and exempting EVs from permit requirements and road tax).
