Mon Mar 17 11:19:01 UTC 2025: **Telangana Government Renames Telugu University, Sparks Political Debate**

HYDERABAD, March 17, 2025 – The Telangana Legislative Assembly approved a bill renaming Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University after eminent freedom fighter Suravaram Pratapa Reddy. This decision, announced by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, has ignited a political firestorm.

The Chief Minister justified the renaming, citing the existence of a similarly named university in Andhra Pradesh and the need to avoid administrative confusion. He also announced that the Cherlapally railway terminal will be named after Potti Sreeramulu and a nature cure hospital after former Chief Minister K. Rosaiah.

However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the move, arguing that the government should instead rename Osmania University after Suravaram Pratapa Reddy. Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar voiced his opposition, a stance met with sharp rebuke from Chief Minister Reddy who accused the BJP of using the issue for political gain and employing divisive caste rhetoric. Reddy cited similar past name changes of other universities in Telangana as precedent and defended the action as part of establishing a distinct Telangana identity.

The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) also opposed the BJP’s suggestion to rename Osmania University, emphasizing its historical significance as a tribute to Mir Osman Ali Khan, the first Raj Pramukh of Hyderabad State. The debate highlights the complex interplay of historical figures, political maneuvering, and regional identity in Telangana.
