**Chennai, March 17, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) have launched a significantly enhanced enforcement drive to curb traffic violations, leveraging advanced technology and a revamped strategy. The initiative, implemented on the orders of the Greater Chennai Police Commissioner, utilizes automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras and real-time monitoring to track and penalize offenders more effectively.
A key component of the new system is a “point-to-point enforcement” strategy. Motorists who violate traffic rules at one checkpoint, such as riding without a helmet or triple riding, will be intercepted at subsequent checkpoints and issued a challan. This system, temporarily suspended during lockdown, has been reactivated with positive results.
The GCTP’s focus is primarily on speeding, riding without helmets, and triple riding. The police are also utilizing the Integrated Traffic Regulation System (ITRS), an AI-powered system incorporating ANPR cameras at 293 traffic signals, interceptor vehicles, and traffic regulation observation zones (TROZ). Live feeds from the ANPR cameras are transmitted to the traffic control room, allowing for swift action against repeat offenders.
Official statistics reveal that the GCTP have already booked 82,330 cases under eight major traffic violation categories prescribed by the Supreme Court, including significant numbers of helmet and stop-line violations. To further strengthen enforcement, the GCTP has intensified night-time vehicle checks.
A notable shift in accident analysis has also been implemented. Previously, investigations focused on fatal accidents. Now, the authorities are including non-fatal accidents in their analysis, sending personnel to accident sites to assess causes and implement immediate remedial measures. This comprehensive approach aims to improve road safety and reduce traffic violations across the city.
