**Brussels, March 17, 2025** – Germany announced today a further €300 million ($326 million) in aid for Syria, to be channeled through the United Nations and other organizations. The announcement was made by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock ahead of an EU-led donor conference in Brussels.
Over half of the funds will directly assist the Syrian people, bypassing the transitional government. The aid will focus on providing essential food, healthcare, emergency shelters, and protection for vulnerable populations, according to the German Foreign Ministry. Support will also extend to Syrian refugees and host communities in neighboring countries – Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Turkey.
Minister Baerbock stressed the importance of an inclusive political process for a peaceful future in Syria, stating, “As Europeans, we stand together for the people of Syria, for a free and peaceful Syria.” She also called for an investigation into the recent killings of hundreds of civilians in Alawite villages and for those responsible to be held accountable. These killings followed several days of violent clashes between loyalists of deposed President Bashar al-Assad and the country’s new Islamist rulers, resulting in over 1,000 deaths according to a war monitoring group.
