**Bhubaneswar, March 17, 2025** – Debendra Pradhan, a veteran leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former Union Minister, passed away at the age of 84 on Monday. Pradhan, who served as a Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, breathed his last at his son’s residence in New Delhi. His son, Dharmendra Pradhan, is the current Union Education Minister.
Pradhan, a three-time Odisha BJP president and a doctor by profession, began his political career in Talcher, Odisha. He played a significant role in establishing the BJP’s presence in the state, serving as state president from 1988 to 1993 and again from 1995 to 1997. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from Deogarh, winning elections in 1998 and 1999. His ministerial roles included Union Minister for Transport and Agriculture from 1999 to 2001.
Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects, praising Pradhan’s contributions to strengthening the BJP in Odisha and his work towards poverty alleviation and social empowerment. President Droupadi Murmu also offered condolences, highlighting his dedication to public service. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Odisha Governor Haribabu Kambhampati lauded Pradhan’s contributions to the state’s progress and his popularity among the people. Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik acknowledged Pradhan’s organizational skills and influence.
Pradhan’s mortal remains are expected to be brought to Bhubaneswar later in the day.
