Mon Mar 17 11:16:17 UTC 2025: ## Manipur Curfew Imposed After Tribal Leader Assault Sparks Clashes

**Churachandpur, Manipur:** A curfew has been imposed in Manipur’s Churachandpur district following violent clashes between members of the Hmar and Zomi tribes. The unrest erupted after the general secretary of the Hmar Inpui, Richard Hmar, was severely beaten by unidentified individuals.

According to police sources, the incident stemmed from a minor traffic altercation. However, the subsequent assault of Mr. Hmar escalated tensions, prompting the Hmar Inpui to issue an ultimatum demanding the attackers’ surrender. When the deadline passed, hundreds of Hmar tribe members took to the streets, engaging in protests and stone-throwing.

The situation deteriorated further with reports of clashes between combined Hmar and Kuki crowds against the Zomi tribe. Videos circulating online show protesters removing a Zomi tribe flag from a mobile tower.

Authorities responded by imposing a curfew under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, and deploying security forces to control the situation.

The Thadou Students’ Association (TSA) expressed deep concern over the escalating violence between the Kuki/Kuki-Zo, Hmar, and Zomi groups, urging dialogue and peace-building initiatives. The TSA emphasized the Thadou tribe’s distinct identity separate from the Kuki tribe.

Churachandpur District Commissioner Dharun Kumar S appealed for calm and peaceful dialogue among community leaders, urging residents to refrain from spreading misinformation. He stressed the importance of maintaining peace and unity in the diverse district. The situation remains tense, with authorities working to restore order.
