Sat Mar 15 19:54:28 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu’s Smart Glasses Initiative for Visually Impaired Faces Backlash

**Chennai, March 16, 2025** – A planned initiative by the Tamil Nadu government to provide smart vision glasses to the visually impaired community has drawn sharp criticism. Announced in the recent state budget as part of an assistive devices project, the ₹40,000 glasses are deemed a wasteful expenditure by members of the community.

Critics argue that the glasses offer functionality already readily available and superior through free apps utilizing voice technology. Raghuraman Kalyanraman, an assistant professor at Government Arts College, Nandanam, called the initiative a “waste of resources,” noting that the readily available OCR software and navigation apps provide faster and more efficient solutions.

Aranga Raja, president of the College Students and Graduates Association of the Blind (CSGAB), echoed these concerns, stating that the community’s needs are better served by providing laptops, a request consistently made to the government. He emphasized that the glasses are not in the best interest of the visually impaired.

Kalyanraman further highlighted the fragility of the glasses, suggesting that malfunctions due to water damage would be difficult to detect. He proposed that providing laptops to students from Class VI onwards would be a more beneficial use of resources, better preparing them for future academic and professional endeavors. The government has yet to respond to the criticism.
