**Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh –** A 24-year-old woman, Shamshin Rahbar, has filed a police complaint alleging she was brutally beaten and her three-year-old son forcibly taken from her in a dowry dispute. The incident, which allegedly occurred last October in Gopiganj, Bhadohi, only resulted in a police case being registered this month.
Rahbar, married to Mohammad Saif in 2020, claims her in-laws repeatedly harassed her for a dowry of Rs 5 lakh (approximately $60,000 USD). She alleges that in October, her husband, father-in-law Firoz alias Dullar, mother-in-law Shahnaz Bano, brother-in-law Shahrukh, and sister-in-law Muskan beat her severely, snatched her son Ata Ahmed, and threw her out of the house. She subsequently returned to her parents’ home.
A case was finally registered on March 13th at the women’s police station against all five individuals. Charges include cruelty by a husband or relative (Section 85 of the IPC), criminal intimidation (Section 351(2)), intentional insult (Section 352), and violations of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Police investigations are underway. The incident highlights the ongoing issue of dowry-related violence in India.
