**New Delhi, March 16, 2025** – Two of the five railway officials removed from their posts following a deadly stampede at New Delhi Railway Station have been given new positions within the Northern Railway Headquarters. The February 15th incident resulted in 18 deaths and numerous injuries during a rush of passengers heading to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.
While the railway administration initially shunted out five officials on March 4th, Mahesh Yadav (former station director) and Anand Mohan (former Senior Divisional Commercial Manager) have been reassigned. Sources within the railway describe their new roles as “punishment postings,” lacking significant operational authority. Yadav is now Deputy Chief Operation Manager for Freight Operations Information System (FOIS), and Mohan is Deputy Chief Operation Manager of Coaching.
The remaining three officials— Divisional Railway Manager Sukhwinder Singh, Additional Divisional Railway Manager Vikram Singh Rana, and Assistant Security Commissioner Mahesh Chand Saini— are awaiting new assignments. Saini was transferred to Kota immediately following the incident.
A high-level inquiry is underway to determine accountability for the tragedy. A senior railway official stated that those found negligent will face stricter penalties than mere transfers once the investigation is complete.
