Sat Mar 15 19:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Maryland Golfer Denny McCarthy Confident Ahead of Players Championship
**PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.** – Denny McCarthy, a Rockville, Maryland native, is brimming with confidence heading into this week’s Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. The PGA Tour pro, known for his exceptional putting, is experiencing a career resurgence thanks to significant improvements in his driving and approach shots.
McCarthy, a three-time Maryland Open champion and two-time Maryland Amateur champion, has yet to win on the PGA Tour since turning professional in 2018. However, he’s had two runner-up finishes in the last two seasons and has made the cut in all six tournaments this year, including three top-25 finishes and one top-10.
His improved ball-striking is attributed to a revamped swing, developed over the past four years with his coach, Brian Creghan, and movement coach, James Spencer. This has resulted in increased swing speed and improved accuracy, allowing his already elite putting skills to shine. While his average driving distance (297.8 yards) is slightly below the PGA Tour average, it’s a considerable improvement over previous seasons.
McCarthy’s history at TPC Sawgrass is positive, with a 13th-place finish in 2023 and a 35th-place finish last year. He also has a strong record at the Valero Texas Open, where he finished second in 2024. His coach, Creghan, believes a win is imminent, highlighting McCarthy’s overall athleticism and competitiveness.
McCarthy himself expresses optimism, stating he feels he’s on the right path and is ready to secure his first PGA Tour victory. He tees off Thursday at 12:56 p.m. in the first round of The Players Championship.
