Sat Mar 15 20:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Austin Wildfire Risk: New Map Highlights Danger Zones, Sparks Debate on Building Codes
**AUSTIN, TX** – With summer’s arrival and the increased risk of wildfires in Central Texas, the Austin Fire Department (AFD) is urging residents to familiarize themselves with a new interactive wildfire risk map. The map, which depicts the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), highlights areas where homes and natural vegetation intersect, increasing the risk of wildfire damage.
According to AFD, 59% of Travis County and 36% of Austin is covered in wildlands, with a significant portion of homes situated within the WUI. The new map, which uses a color-coded system (white: low risk; red: high risk), shows considerable variation in risk across Austin, with some council districts facing significantly higher danger than others.
The current WUI map, dating back to 2015, is slated for a major expansion. City council members will soon discuss updating regulations to encompass 71% of the city’s land parcels within the expanded WUI zone. This move comes after Austin was ranked fifth nationally for the number of homes at risk of wildfire damage.
Austin adopted wildfire-resistant building codes in 2020, requiring new and remodeled homes in high-risk areas to use fire-resistant materials and implement fire-safe construction techniques. However, these regulations have raised concerns about increased construction costs potentially passed on to homebuyers, along with the possibility of higher home insurance premiums. The debate over balancing wildfire safety with affordability is expected to continue as the city updates its WUI map and building codes. Residents can access the interactive wildfire risk map on the Austin Fire Department website to assess their individual risk and find further information.
