**Guwahati, Assam –** The Indian National Congress (INC) has strongly condemned the arrest of its Assam spokesperson, Reetam Singh, for a social media post. Singh was arrested on March 15th by Lakhimpur district police, with assistance from Guwahati Police, from his home in Guwahati.
The arrest stems from a March 13th post on X (formerly Twitter) where Singh questioned the status of cases against three senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders – a former Assam Chief Minister and two serving MLAs. The post linked to a news report about a 2021 rape conviction in Dhemaji district.
Congress communication chief Jairam Ramesh denounced the arrest as “worse than atrocious,” asserting that Singh’s post was “perfectly reasonable.” He further criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on X for the action.
Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, also took to X, describing Singh’s arrest as “brutal,” alleging that he was “dragged away” and prevented from speaking to Gogoi. The Congress party maintains that Singh’s inquiry was legitimate and his arrest is an act of political repression.
