**Chennai, March 15, 2025** – Tamil Nadu’s Finance Secretary, T. Udhayachandran, announced the state’s impressive 22% GST growth, exceeding the national average, and outlined an ambitious plan to achieve a $1 trillion economy by 2030. Addressing reporters after the state budget presentation, Mr. Udhayachandran attributed this success to enhanced data analytics and tax administration, particularly focusing on the digital economy. He highlighted the need to address grey areas in digital service taxation, utilizing data from payment aggregators for better oversight.
The state’s economic strategy centers on several key sectors. A significant investment in semiconductors is planned, aiming to transform Coimbatore into a hub for various aspects of the industry, from testing facilities to fabrication. Furthermore, the government will prioritize sunrise sectors like shipbuilding (with projects in Cuddalore and Thoothukudi), technical textiles, modernized power looms, and the AVGC (animation, visual effects, gaming, and comics) industry, focusing on high labor-intensive projects to boost job creation.
Education also received considerable attention. A ₹500 crore allocation aims to elevate Anna University to a top-10 national and top-150 global institution within five years, leveraging government funding, alumni networks, and industry partnerships. Mr. Udhayachandran emphasized the importance of international trade relations in achieving these ambitious goals, highlighting Tamil Nadu’s faster-than-national-average growth rate.
