Fri Mar 14 19:00:32 UTC 2025: ## Putin Offers Surrender Terms to Ukrainian Troops in Kursk Amidst Trump’s Plea for Ceasefire

**MOSCOW/KYIV** – Amidst a flurry of diplomatic activity, Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered a lifeline to Ukrainian soldiers reportedly encircled in the Kursk region, promising them life and humane treatment if they surrender. This offer follows a direct appeal from former US President Donald Trump urging Putin to prevent a potential “horrible massacre.”

Trump, in social media posts, claimed thousands of Ukrainian troops were surrounded and vulnerable in Kursk and pleaded with Putin to spare their lives. Putin, acknowledging Trump’s appeal during a Security Council meeting, stated that the offer of surrender and humane treatment is conditional upon Kyiv issuing an order for their troops to lay down their arms.

Ukraine vehemently denies its forces are encircled in Kursk, dismissing the Russian claims as fabrication, though President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged a “very difficult” situation for Ukrainian troops in the area. Recent Russian counteroffensives have reversed Ukrainian gains made in the region last summer.

The offer of surrender comes as US President Biden’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, recently met with Putin in Moscow to discuss a US-proposed 30-day ceasefire. Kyiv has expressed willingness to accept the proposal, while Putin, while indicating support for a ceasefire, outlined several conditions, including Ukrainian abandonment of NATO aspirations and territorial concessions. Trump expressed cautious optimism about the prospects for peace following the talks.

Zelenskyy also voiced optimism for a swift end to the war, urging allies to pressure Moscow. However, he expressed concerns that Putin might delay a ceasefire to gain further advantage. The Kremlin, while acknowledging Putin’s support for Trump’s push for a settlement, highlighted the need to address several outstanding issues before a truce can be implemented.

Former British Ambassador to Russia Tony Brenton highlighted that while Russia is gaining ground in Kursk and may want to secure its gains before any ceasefire, the complexities of implementing and policing a ceasefire remain significant obstacles to a lasting peace. Nevertheless, Brenton expressed cautious optimism that a ceasefire could be achieved within the coming weeks, paving the way for further negotiations on a long-term peace agreement. The situation remains tense, with significant challenges still ahead in achieving a durable resolution to the conflict.
