**Vadodara, Gujarat –** A 20-year-old law student, Rakshit Chaurasiya, is in custody after a car crash in Vadodara’s Karelibaug area resulted in the death of one woman and injuries to several others on Thursday night. Chaurasiya, who was driving at a high speed (50-60 kmph), claimed his airbags deployed after hitting a scooter, obscuring his vision and leading to the multiple collisions.
The accident, caught on video and widely circulated online, shows Chaurasiya’s car careening into multiple vehicles at a busy intersection. Hemaliben Patel died at the scene, while three to four others, including a 12-year-old girl and a 40-year-old man, sustained serious injuries. Initial reports indicate the involvement of at least three vehicles, including two active vehicles and an electric vehicle.
While initially denying intoxication, Chaurasiya later admitted to consuming *bhaang* (cannabis). He expressed remorse, stating, “I want to meet the family of the victims; it is my fault.” Police confirmed the driver was under the influence and have taken him into custody. Joint Commissioner of Police Leena Patil confirmed the arrest, and Police Commissioner Narasimha Komar detailed the extent of the damage and the number of vehicles involved. The incident has prompted outrage and renewed calls for stricter traffic enforcement.
