Sat Mar 15 12:53:55 UTC 2025: ## Gaza Ceasefire Talks Falter After Israeli Strike Kills Five Palestinians

**Cairo, Egypt – March 15, 2025** – A fragile ceasefire in Gaza was further jeopardized today following an Israeli airstrike that killed at least five Palestinians, including two journalists, in Beit Lahiya. The attack, which targeted a car carrying members of the Al-Khair Foundation and accompanying journalists, occurred as Hamas officials are in Cairo engaging in ceasefire negotiations with mediators.

The Israeli military has yet to comment on the incident. While Israel claims its actions are in response to threats from Hamas militants, Palestinian health officials report dozens of civilian deaths since the January 19th ceasefire, highlighting its tenuous nature.

The strike comes as negotiations for a permanent ceasefire remain stalled. Israel has rejected Hamas’s demand to move to the second phase of talks, which would necessitate discussions on a lasting peace. This rejection follows the expiration of the temporary first phase on March 2nd.

Further complicating matters, Hamas’ offer to release an American-Israeli dual national hostage, Edan Alexander, in exchange for Israel commencing the second phase of negotiations was dismissed by Israel as a propaganda tactic. Israel, supported by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, prefers to extend the temporary ceasefire.

The current crisis stems from the October 7, 2023, Hamas cross-border attack on Israel, which resulted in significant loss of life on both sides. While Israel cites over 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken, Gaza health officials report over 48,000 Palestinian deaths due to the subsequent Israeli assault. Accusations of war crimes and genocide against Israel persist. The ongoing violence and the breakdown in negotiations raise serious concerns about the potential for a renewed escalation of the conflict.
