**News Article:**

GUWAHATI, ASSAM – Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the first phase of the revamped Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Assam on Saturday. The ₹167.4-crore project, spread across 340 acres, will eventually cost ₹1,024 crore upon completion of its two phases.

The newly inaugurated phase includes a five-story building equipped with smart classrooms, a weapon simulator for safe combat training, research labs, administrative offices, a museum, and a modern parade ground. The academy aims to provide seamless theoretical and practical police training.

The state-of-the-art weapon simulator allows law enforcement personnel to practice real-world combat scenarios without the risks and costs associated with live-fire exercises. It is adaptable to various firearms and will be used for basic training, skill honing, and assessment. The simulator will also be crucial in training recruits for specialized courses and commando training.

The smart classrooms feature interactive digital boards and personal computers, and the building also houses a library, computer labs, and seminar rooms. The second phase, estimated at ₹425.48 crore, will focus on constructing residential quarters for 240 families, hostels for 312 officers/personnel, and accommodation for 2,640 trainees.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal accompanied Mr. Shah, who arrived in Assam on Friday for a three-day visit encompassing both Assam and Mizoram. The inauguration aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on SMART policing.
