Fri Mar 14 04:02:30 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Rejects National Rupee Symbol in Budget, Sparking Controversy

**Chennai, March 14, 2025** – The DMK-led Tamil Nadu government has ignited a national debate by replacing the official rupee symbol (₹) with the Tamil script for “Ru” in its 2025 budget. This unprecedented move marks a significant escalation of the state’s opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP) and is being seen as a symbolic rejection of national currency standards.

The decision comes amid ongoing tensions over the three-language formula within the NEP. The state government’s substitution of the widely recognized ₹ symbol, designed by Udaya Kumar, son of a former DMK MLA and currently a professor at IIT Guwahati, has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters.

The ₹ symbol, adopted nationally in 2010, was the result of a nationwide competition. Kumar’s winning design cleverly combined the Devanagari “Ra” and the Roman “R” to create a unique and internationally recognizable symbol. His work, which followed extensive research into both historical and modern representations of currency, has since become a significant part of India’s visual identity. He has gone on to design logos for prominent institutions such as IIT Hyderabad and the National Testing Agency.

Prior to the introduction of the ₹ symbol, the Indian rupee was often represented as “Rs” or “INR,” leading to confusion with other regional currencies. The 2010 adoption aimed to create a distinctive and culturally relevant symbol representing India’s economic strength on the global stage.

The Tamil Nadu government’s action has raised concerns about the uniformity of national symbols and the potential implications for financial transactions and international recognition. The move is likely to further fuel the already existing debate surrounding linguistic and cultural identity within the context of national policies.
