**Chennai, March 14, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government announced plans to establish 25 “Anbucholai” day-care centers for senior citizens across the state. The initiative, part of the 2025 budget, aims to address the challenges of loneliness, healthcare, and financial dependency faced by the elderly.
Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu stated that the ₹10 crore project will see centers opened in major cities including Madurai, Coimbatore, Trichy, and others. These centers will offer day-care assistance, access to essential medical care, and recreational activities, supported by voluntary organizations.
The budget also includes significant allocations for children’s welfare. The highly successful Chief Minister’s Breakfast scheme, credited with improving student attendance, nutrition, and learning outcomes, will expand to include government-aided urban schools, benefiting an additional 3.14 lakh students at a cost of ₹600 crore. Furthermore, ₹83 crore is allocated for constructing new buildings for 500 anganwadi centers currently operating in rented spaces, and ₹3,676 crore is earmarked for the Integrated Child Development Scheme. A total of ₹8,597 crore has been allocated to the Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department.
