Fri Mar 14 07:13:34 UTC 2025: ## Meta Replaces Fact-Checkers with Crowdsourced System, Claims Reduced Bias

**MENLO PARK, CA —** Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, announced Thursday it will replace its third-party fact-checking program with a new crowdsourced feature called “Community Notes,” leveraging technology developed by Elon Musk’s X. The company claims this shift will result in a less biased system for identifying misinformation.

The transition, initially announced in January, follows years of criticism from conservatives who alleged political bias in previous fact-checking efforts. While welcomed by some, the move has raised concerns among misinformation experts who fear an increase in the spread of false information online.

Meta will utilize an open-source algorithm from X to power Community Notes, allowing for continuous improvement and adaptation. The company plans to test the feature starting March 18th with 200,000 pre-registered contributors who will assess the accuracy of content. Notes will only be published if deemed accurate by a diverse group of contributors.

“We expect Community Notes to be less biased than the third-party fact-checking program it replaces, and to operate at a greater scale,” Meta stated in a blog post. The company acknowledges the system won’t be perfect but commits to ongoing improvements based on user feedback and performance data. Following US beta testing, Meta intends to roll out Community Notes globally. The company’s previous reliance on external fact-checkers, initiated in 2016, was justified as the best available solution at the time; however, Meta now believes a crowdsourced approach will prove more effective and less susceptible to bias.
