**Mohali, Punjab –** A prominent scientist from the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) has died following a violent altercation over a parking space in Mohali, Punjab. Dr. Abhishek Swarnkar, 39, originally from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident on Tuesday night.
Dr. Swarnkar, who had recently returned to India from Switzerland and joined IISER as a project scientist, was reportedly involved in a dispute with his neighbor, identified as Monty, near his rented home in Sector 67. CCTV footage shows Monty pushing Dr. Swarnkar to the ground and assaulting him after an argument about parking. Dr. Swarnkar, who had recently undergone a kidney transplant and was on dialysis, was rushed to a hospital but later died.
IISER has released a statement expressing profound sorrow over the loss of the “brilliant mind,” demanding strict action against the accused. The statement highlighted Dr. Swarnkar’s achievements, including his selection by the Department of Science and Technology to meet Nobel Laureates in 2017 and the recent publication of his research paper in a prestigious scientific journal.
Dr. Swarnkar’s mother, Malti Devi, recounted to NDTV the ongoing harassment the family faced regarding parking. She stated that her son had been repeatedly asked to move his motorcycle despite making efforts to accommodate his neighbors’ concerns. The family had been living in the rented house since December 2023.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident, and Monty is reportedly in custody. The death of Dr. Swarnkar has sparked outrage and calls for stricter measures to prevent similar incidents.
