Fri Mar 14 01:30:00 UTC 2025: **India’s Telecom Giants Partner with Starlink for Nationwide Satellite Internet Access**
NEW DELHI – India’s telecom landscape is poised for a significant upgrade with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, the country’s two largest telecom operators, partnering with SpaceX’s Starlink to bring high-speed satellite internet access to even the most remote regions. This collaboration, announced following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Elon Musk, aims to bridge the digital divide and expand internet connectivity nationwide.
Starlink, known for its low Earth orbit satellite network, will provide the technology for this ambitious project. According to telecom expert Sandeep Budki, this will revolutionize connectivity, particularly in underserved areas currently lacking reliable internet access. He highlighted the key advantage of satellite internet: coverage extends to any location with a clear view of the sky, eliminating the need for extensive terrestrial infrastructure.
The partnership will initially focus on business-to-business (B2B) services, targeting sectors such as education, healthcare, and industries. While consumer pricing remains undisclosed, Mr. Budki anticipates initially higher costs, potentially mitigated by future government subsidies and competitive pricing strategies from Jio and Airtel. He also suggests that free trials are likely upon launch.
The deal also promises to bring in-flight internet access to domestic airlines, a service already common internationally. Both Airtel and Jio will distribute Starlink equipment through their extensive retail networks, providing convenient access for customers.
While the rollout depends on government approval, which has been pending since 2022 due to national security concerns, the partnership is viewed as a significant step forward. Mr. Budki noted that the collaboration may be a strategic move for Airtel and Jio, allowing them to leverage Starlink’s existing infrastructure while simultaneously developing their own satellite internet capabilities. The success of Starlink in other markets, including its crucial role in providing internet connectivity to Ukraine, adds to the optimism surrounding the project. The widespread brand recognition of Airtel and Jio will be instrumental in introducing Starlink to the Indian market.
