Fri Mar 14 17:07:54 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Announces ₹2,100 Crore Elevated Road Project for Chennai

**Chennai, March 14, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government announced a significant infrastructure project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in Chennai. State Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu revealed that the newly established Tamil Nadu State Highways Authority (TANSHA) will construct a ₹2,100 crore, 14.2 km elevated corridor from Thiruvanmiyur to Uthandi along East Coast Road (ECR).

This four-lane road, the first project undertaken by TANSHA, is expected to take four years to complete. The project benefits from the ongoing widening of the ECR carriageway to 30 meters, eliminating the need for land acquisition and minimizing disruption to existing traffic flow. The detailed project report (DPR) is nearing completion, with ramp locations yet to be finalized. The design is expected to mirror the Coimbatore-Avinashi elevated corridor.

Further initiatives to ease traffic congestion across the state include:

* **A feasibility study for a new 28 km, four-lane road:** Connecting Karunguzhi in Chengalpattu with Mamallapuram via Thirukazhukundram, aimed at reducing congestion on the Chennai-Tiruchi National Highway.
* **Construction of 14 bypass roads:** These projects, costing a combined ₹1,713 crore, will include bypasses in Coimbatore (12.5 km, ₹348 crore) and Tirunelveli (12.4 km, ₹225 crore), among others.
* **Development of a Madurai Outer Ring Road:** A DPR will be prepared for this 48 km road.
* **Extensive tree planting:** 10 lakh native trees will be planted, geotagged, and maintained across the state.

The announcement comes as TANSHA, established under the State Highways Authority Act, 2024, begins its operations. The authority has already appointed IAS officers and engineers to oversee its projects.
