Fri Mar 14 06:18:15 UTC 2025: ## Canada Challenges US Steel and Aluminum Tariffs at WTO
**Geneva, March 14, 2025** – Canada has formally challenged the United States’ 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports at the World Trade Organization (WTO). The complaint, filed on March 13th, argues that the tariffs, which took effect on March 12th and include no exemptions for Canada, violate US obligations under WTO agreements.
Canada, the leading steel supplier to the US, contends that the tariffs are inconsistent with international trade rules. The US imports approximately half of its steel and aluminum, crucial for manufacturing various products, from cars and airplanes to beverage cans. The tariffs, imposed by President Donald Trump, aim to bolster the struggling domestic steel industry facing increased competition, particularly from Asia.
The WTO dispute consultation process has now begun, offering both countries a 60-day window to negotiate a resolution. If negotiations fail, Canada may request a WTO panel to adjudicate the dispute. This is Canada’s second WTO complaint against the US regarding tariffs; a separate complaint was filed on March 4th concerning earlier tariff actions. The US previously announced, then paused, similar blanket tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico in January.
