**Bengaluru, March 14, 2025** – The sudden closure of Technicolor India, a major player in the animation, visual effects, gaming, comics, and extended reality (AVGC-XR) industry, has left over 3,200 employees jobless and sent shockwaves through the sector. The company, which contributed to hundreds of Hollywood films including *Mufasa: The Lion King*, announced its closure on February 24th, leaving employees with just 15 minutes to vacate their offices.
The mass layoff, described by affected employees as “a Hollywood horror movie,” is the first of its magnitude in the Indian AVGC-XR industry and has particularly impacted Bengaluru, where approximately 3,000 employees were based. The closure followed the Technicolor Group’s filing for court recovery procedures in France due to financial difficulties and an inability to secure investors.
The unexpected nature of the shutdown has led to widespread distress, with unpaid salaries, unpaid taxes, and outstanding rent for many employees. The Labour Commissioner’s office is currently investigating employee grievances, including unpaid February salaries and tax remittances. While the company issued experience certificates, it has not officially terminated employees’ services, a move interpreted by some as a tactic to avoid immediate legal action.
The event coincided with the GAFX-2025 conference in Karnataka, highlighting the irony of discussions on the industry’s growth potential alongside the devastating impact on Technicolor’s workforce. Karnataka IT Minister Priyank Kharge attributed the closure to global factors but emphasized the state’s commitment to fostering the AVGC-XR sector.
Industry experts, however, believe that while the closure is a significant setback, the work previously undertaken by Technicolor India is likely to be absorbed by other domestic AVGC-XR companies, potentially leading to consolidation within the sector. The global slowdown, exacerbated by the recent Hollywood writers’ strike and lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, is also cited as a contributing factor.
