**Hyderabad, India** – Holi, the vibrant festival of colours, is being celebrated across India with a diverse array of regional traditions. While the burning of Holika and the playful exchange of colours are common nationwide, several regions showcase unique celebrations.
In Uttar Pradesh’s Barsana, the ” Lathmar Holi” is a spirited event inspired by the Krishna-Radha legend. Men from the nearby Nandgaon village visit Barsana, only to be playfully chased and playfully beaten with sticks by the women of Barsana. This boisterous yet jovial tradition is a highlight of the festival.
A stark contrast is found in Varanasi, where the “Masan Holi” involves the symbolic application of ashes from cremation grounds. Sadhus and Shiva devotees participate in this unique ritual, honoring Lord Shiva after offering prayers.
Goa celebrates Holi as “Shigmo,” a vibrant spectacle featuring traditional Goan music, dance, and colourful processions through the streets.
Udaipur, known as the “City of Lakes,” hosts a regal celebration called “Royal Holi,” held within the magnificent City Palace. Members of the royal family participate alongside locals and tourists, enjoying traditional Rajasthani music and dance performances.
In Vrindavan, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, the festival takes on a fragrant twist. Devotees celebrate by showering each other with colorful flowers, creating a beautiful and aromatic atmosphere amidst the numerous temples filled with worshippers. Many see this as a representation of Radha and Krishna’s love.
