**Bengaluru, March 13, 2025** – A 58-year-old woman, Selvi Murugan, was electrocuted while attempting to operate a water pump illegally connected to the Cauvery water pipeline in Anandapura, Chamarajpet, Bengaluru. The incident has highlighted the dangers of unauthorized water extraction and illegal power usage in the area.

According to Chamarajpet police, who have received a complaint and will file an FIR, Murugan was trying to draw water from the pipeline when she suffered a fatal electric shock. She is survived by four children.

An Assistant Executive Engineer from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) stated that residents in the slum area, despite having legal water connections, frequently install pumps to directly extract water from the pipeline. The AEE claimed Murugan was electrocuted while attempting to repair faulty wiring.

A Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom) official confirmed an investigation will be launched into how residents were accessing electricity for these unauthorized pumps. The official warned against the dangers of illegal power usage, emphasizing the potential for fatal accidents.

The incident has prompted concerns about the safety risks associated with illegal water extraction and power connections. Investigations are underway by both BWSSB and Bescom.
