Thu Mar 13 08:01:55 UTC 2025: ## Taiwan Vows Stronger Defence Amid Rising Chinese Infiltration

**Taipei, Taiwan –** Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te announced increased measures to counter China’s escalating infiltration and espionage activities targeting the island’s defenses. Speaking at a press conference on March 13th, 2025, President Lai cited a range of recent incidents, characterizing them as psychological warfare falling into a “gray area” short of open conflict.

These incidents include the expulsion of a Chinese woman who repeatedly posted pro-China propaganda online, the actions of Taiwanese artists and influencers promoting Chinese sovereignty claims, and the passing of sensitive military information to Chinese agents by retired Taiwanese service members. President Lai emphasized the need for stronger legal safeguards to prevent and detect such activities, stating that China’s efforts aim to “subvert, obtain secrets, lure members of the armed forces and influence public opinion.”

China’s military has warned of tightening its grip on Taiwan if separatist movements escalate. Beijing’s refusal to engage officially with President Lai’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) underscores the ongoing political tensions. China’s regular military exercises near Taiwan, including incursions into its airspace and waters, are seen as attempts to intimidate the island’s population and weaken its military.

President Lai’s announcement comes amidst growing concerns over China’s assertive actions towards Taiwan. The Taiwanese government is committed to maintaining the island’s de-facto independence and is expected to increase its defence budget accordingly.
