NEW YORK – Get ready to turn it up to eleven! Bleecker Street announced today that “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” a sequel to the iconic 1984 mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap,” will be released in theaters on September 12th. The film reunites the original cast – Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer – as the members of the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap, back together after a 15-year hiatus for one final concert.
Director Rob Reiner, also behind the original film, returns to helm the sequel, once again following the band through their tour as documentarian Marty DiBergi. The sequel promises appearances from several music legends, including Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood.
This announcement follows a newly restored theatrical re-release of the original “This Is Spinal Tap,” which will also be made available digitally and on streaming platforms for the first time in years. The original film, a cultural touchstone that helped define the mockumentary genre, was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2002.
Bleecker Street, which acquired the U.S. rights to both films, expressed excitement about continuing the Spinal Tap legacy. CEO Andrew Karpen stated that the film is “a cultural touchstone that pioneered the mockumentary genre and left an indelible mark on both film and music.” The studio is confident the sequel will resonate with both longtime fans and new audiences.
A teaser for “Spinal Tap II” already features a nod to the original, showcasing the band’s legendary amplifier turned “up to eleven.” The film is produced by Rob Reiner, Michele Reiner, and Matthew George, with financing from Castle Rock Entertainment.
