**SEOUL, South Korea –** Two South Korean Air Force pilots have been charged with criminal negligence following a bombing incident last week that injured 29 people and caused significant property damage. The incident occurred during a joint U.S.-South Korea military exercise, “Freedom Shield,” near the border with North Korea.
Eight unguided bombs were accidentally dropped on a village in Pocheon after the pilots entered incorrect coordinates into their aircraft systems, according to the Defence Ministry’s Criminal Investigation Command. The investigation confirmed pilot error as the direct cause.
The pilots, who have been grounded and face a review of their flight certification, are charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm. The Air Force chief of staff has issued a public apology and promised a review of mission procedures to prevent future accidents.
Residents of Pocheon, an area frequently used for military training exercises, have long voiced concerns over safety risks associated with the drills. North Korea has condemned the incident, highlighting the potential for such exercises to escalate into armed conflict. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
