Wed Mar 12 20:42:29 UTC 2025: ## Putin Visits Kursk Amidst Reported Ukrainian Withdrawal

**MOSCOW, Russia** – Russian President Vladimir Putin made a rare visit to the Kursk region on Wednesday, hailing recent advances by Russian forces and promising the complete liberation of the area from Ukrainian troops. His visit follows reports of a significant Ukrainian withdrawal from territory seized last August.

The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed the capture of five more villages, with state media showcasing footage of Russian troops in Sudzha, a town near the Ukrainian border. Military bloggers from both sides suggest a Ukrainian retreat is underway, marking a reversal of the initial gains made in last year’s surprise cross-border incursion.

While the Kremlin described the military situation as having “good dynamics,” Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskii, acknowledged a strategic repositioning of troops to minimize losses, phrasing often used to describe a withdrawal. He maintained that Ukrainian forces would continue defending the region “as long as it is appropriate and necessary,” indicating ongoing fighting in the area.

Putin, dressed in military fatigues, expressed confidence in a complete expulsion of Ukrainian forces from Kursk, stating, “I am counting on the fact that all the combat tasks facing our units will be fulfilled, and the territory of the Kursk region will soon be completely liberated from the enemy.”

This development unfolds as the United States pushes for a 30-day ceasefire, a proposal endorsed by Kyiv but seemingly rejected by Moscow. The Kremlin is currently reviewing the proposal, but Putin has previously indicated his preference for a complete end to hostilities rather than a temporary truce. The situation in Kursk remains volatile, with active fighting reported around Sudzha.
