**Port Louis, Mauritius –** Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded Mauritius’ highest civilian honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean, on Wednesday during Mauritius’ 57th National Day celebrations. President Dharam Gokhool presented the award, marking the first time an Indian leader has received this prestigious recognition.

PM Modi described the award as a tribute to the centuries-long cultural and historical ties between India and Mauritius. He dedicated the honour to the generations of Indians who migrated to Mauritius and emphasized the shared commitment to regional peace and development. He also viewed the award as a responsibility to further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations.

The ceremony included a participation of an Indian Navy marching contingent in the National Day parade and a port call by an Indian Naval Ship. PM Modi also jointly inaugurated the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation, a $4.74 million India-funded center of excellence for training Mauritian civil servants, further strengthening the bilateral relationship. This institute aims to enhance capacity building and foster research in public administration. The visit also included engagement with alumni of India’s ITEC scholarship program. This is PM Modi’s 21st international award from a foreign nation.
