**Singapore, March 1, 2024** – Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka deflected speculation about a potential return to the PGA Tour, despite recent comments from Fred Couples suggesting he desires a comeback. While acknowledging a text conversation with Couples, Koepka emphasized his current contract obligations with LIV Golf, reportedly worth over $100 million, extending through 2026. “I’ve got a contract obligation out here to fulfill, and then we’ll see what happens,” Koepka stated at a press conference in Singapore.
Koepka’s comments come amidst ongoing negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia for a potential reunification of men’s professional golf. The merger talks, involving PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, player directors Tiger Woods and Adam Scott, and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, even included a meeting with President Trump at the White House on February 20th.
However, significant hurdles remain. Adam Scott highlighted the differing formats of LIV Golf (team-based, shotgun starts, 54 holes) and the PGA Tour as a major point of contention. “The biggest hang-up is how we see the highest level of competitive golf going forward,” Scott explained. “It’s hard to find a balance acceptable for everybody, and it may not be ultimately possible.”
Koepka’s current focus remains on improving his performance in LIV Golf and the majors. His LIV Golf ranking sits at 22nd, and he’s currently unranked in the Official World Golf Ranking due to LIV events not awarding world ranking points. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Koepka remains resolute: “Right now, I’m just focused on how do I play better, how do I play better in the majors…It’s just a revolving cycle. I’ve got nothing. Everybody else seems to know more than I do.”
