**Kottayam, Kerala – March 13, 2025** – K.K. Kochu, a prominent Dalit intellectual, writer, and activist, passed away in Kottayam on Thursday. Kochu, born in 1949, dedicated his life to advancing the Dalit movement in Kerala, significantly shaping its cultural and intellectual discourse.

A key figure in furthering the legacy of Dalit leaders like Ayyankali and Poykayil Appachan, Kochu is credited with mainstreaming the movement through his prolific writings, speeches, and activism. He authored numerous books and over 100 articles, contributing to mainstream periodicals as a critic, editor, historian, and Dalit theorist. His autobiography, *Dalithan*, is also available in English translation.

His activism spanned decades, encompassing participation in agricultural workers’ struggles, collaboration with the extreme Left, and leadership within the Dalit community’s political and social movements. In the post-Mandal-Masjid era, Kochu developed a new discourse around Dalit politics, grounded in Ambedkarite principles of social justice and representative democracy. His work frequently referenced the influence of Ambedkar, Ayyankali, Sahodaran Ayyappan, and Sree Narayana Guru.

Kochu also held leadership positions, including chairmanship of the Kerala Dalit Mahasabha. He was known for his critical analyses of Kerala’s history, his exploration of Buddhist legacies within the Dalit community, and his insightful critiques of language, literature, and culture.
