**Bengaluru, March 13, 2025** – Albert Hera, an experimental jazz musician and protégé of Bobby McFerrin, is making waves in Bengaluru with his unique approach to music and community. Hera, currently on his first trip to India, describes the city as overwhelmingly intense, yet profoundly beautiful, citing a funeral procession he witnessed as a striking example of life’s intensity, even in death.
Hera’s musical journey took a pivotal turn after a 2002 McFerrin concert, where an unexpected “namaste” from the legendary singer inspired him to quit his job and return to music. A subsequent dream featuring St. Francis of Assisi led him to a chance encounter with McFerrin in Assisi, solidifying his path.
The core of Hera’s work centers on “Circle Singing,” an improvisational practice emphasizing community and spontaneity, drawing from jazz, folk, African, and Latin traditions. He sees the circle as a symbol of early human connection and safety, mirroring the collaborative spirit of his workshops at Bengaluru’s Shoonya Centre and Indian Music Experience.
Hera has also developed “Epic Jazz,” a genre he describes as improvisational and narrative, focusing on creating unique experiences in each performance. While deeply influenced by McFerrin, Hera emphasizes his independent journey, carrying forward the values of humanity, trust, and connection he learned from his mentor.
Despite the challenges of maintaining artistic discipline, Hera’s ultimate fulfillment comes from the joy he finds in his music, a sentiment powerfully reaffirmed by his late father’s final words. Hera’s visit to Bengaluru highlights his unique blend of musical innovation and a profound appreciation for human connection.
