Thu Mar 13 16:00:00 UTC 2025: **Steelers Bolster Secondary with Signing of Veteran Cornerback Brandin Echols**
PITTSBURGH, PA – The Pittsburgh Steelers have added depth to their defensive backfield, signing veteran cornerback Brandin Echols to a two-year contract. Echols, 27, joins the Steelers after four seasons with the New York Jets.
A sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Echols has proven his versatility, playing both outside cornerback and in the slot. In 59 career games (19 starts), he’s recorded five interceptions and 16 pass defenses. During the 2024 season, he played significant snaps filling in for injured starters, showcasing his ability to perform at a high level in various roles. His contributions extended beyond defense; Echols was also a valuable special teams contributor for the Jets. His impressive athleticism (4.36-second 40-yard dash and 41 ½-inch vertical jump) allows him to exceed expectations given his size.
Steelers general manager Omar Khan (or equivalent title, if available) stated (add quote if available) that Echols’ experience and versatility make him a valuable addition to the team. Echols will compete for a starting role and provide crucial depth in the secondary, potentially adding competition for second-year pro Beanie Bishop in the slot. His special teams experience is also a significant asset.
The signing of Echols follows other free agency moves by the Steelers, including the additions of linebacker Malik Harrison (two-year contract), running back Kenneth Gainwell (one-year contract), and tight end Donald Parham (one-year contract).
