VIJAYAWADA, Andhra Pradesh – Cement manufacturers in Andhra Pradesh have been ordered to significantly increase their use of Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) in their kilns. This directive, issued Thursday by the Swachha Andhra Corporation and the A.P. Pollution Control Board, stems from the 2018 Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, which mandate a minimum 15% RDF utilization in cement production.

Officials stated that the current daily waste generation in the state’s 123 urban local bodies is approximately 7,000 tons, a figure expected to rise with the inclusion of rural waste. They emphasized the need for daily waste processing to eliminate the reliance on landfills.

Cement companies within a 400-kilometer radius of each municipality and corporation must comply with these rules, officials stressed. A joint technical committee will be formed to assist companies in meeting the new requirements. The initiative aims to reduce coal consumption in cement production while addressing the state’s growing waste management challenges.
