Wed Mar 12 10:31:43 UTC 2025: ## Russian Captain Arrested After Cargo Ship Collision in North Sea

**London, March 12, 2025** – The captain of the MV Solong, a cargo ship involved in a collision with a US-flagged tanker off the Yorkshire coast, has been arrested. The captain, a 59-year-old Russian national, is being held on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter following the incident on Monday.

The Solong, a Portuguese-flagged vessel owned by the German company Ernst Russ, crashed into the Stena Immaculate, a tanker carrying jet fuel for the US military. The collision resulted in significant fires and explosions, leaving one crew member missing and presumed dead. Fuel spilled into the sea, raising environmental concerns.

Ernst Russ confirmed the captain’s nationality and stated that the rest of the Solong’s crew was comprised of Russian and Filipino nationals. The Stena Immaculate was at anchor at the time of the collision.

The Telegraph newspaper reported that the Solong failed steering-related safety checks in Dublin last July. The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
