Tue Mar 11 10:00:00 UTC 2025: ## High Wind Warning: Increased Fire Risk in Parts of Virginia and Maryland
**CUMBERLAND, MD (March 11, 2025)** – A Special Weather Statement issued this morning warns of an elevated risk of rapidly spreading wildfires across northwest Virginia, eastern West Virginia, and north-central and western Maryland. The warning is in effect until 7:00 PM EDT.
Strong southwest winds gusting between 15 and 25 mph, coupled with low relative humidity (20-30 percent) and dry conditions, create ideal circumstances for wildfires to ignite and spread quickly. Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution when engaging in any outdoor burning activities. Those considering burning are advised to check with local burn permitting authorities before proceeding. Even with permits, extreme caution is warranted due to the heightened fire danger. Locally higher wind gusts are expected along ridge lines. The National Weather Service advises residents to remain vigilant and report any fires immediately. Sunny skies and a high near 75°F are expected today.
