Tue Mar 11 01:35:25 UTC 2025: ## Israeli Air Strikes Target Military Sites in Southern Syria

**DAMASCUS/JERUSALEM** – Israeli warplanes carried out multiple airstrikes on Monday night targeting military sites in Syria’s southern Deraa province, according to Syrian state media and a UK-based monitoring group. The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that the attacks hit the towns of Jbab and Izraa, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) specified that Israeli fighter jets launched at least 17 strikes against two military positions: Artillery Regiment 89 and the 12th Brigade. Neither SANA nor SOHR reported any casualties.

Israeli media, citing unnamed sources, claimed the strikes targeted Syrian army outposts, weapons depots, radars, tanks, and artillery, allegedly to prevent their seizure by rebel groups. The attacks are the latest in a series of Israeli incursions into Syrian territory. SOHR reported over 500 Israeli airstrikes in Syria between December 8 and 31, 2024, and a further 21 strikes so far this year.

Israel has consistently justified its air strikes as preventative measures to stop weapons from falling into the hands of groups considered hostile. This stance was reiterated last month by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who demanded the demilitarization of southern Syria and declared his government’s opposition to the new Syrian government’s forces operating near the Israeli border. The increased activity follows the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December. Israel’s military has also reportedly expanded its presence within the UN-patrolled buffer zone separating Israel and Syria in the occupied Golan Heights.
