Mon Mar 10 10:10:17 UTC 2025: **German Airports Grounded by One-Day Warning Strike**
Berlin, March 10, 2025 – A 24-hour warning strike by public sector employees and ground staff at 13 major German airports brought air travel to a near standstill on Monday. The walkout, organized by the ver.di service workers union, resulted in the cancellation of the vast majority of flights across the country, impacting major hubs like Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin, as well as smaller airports.
Frankfurt Airport saw 1,054 of 1,116 scheduled flights cancelled, while Berlin Airport experienced a complete shutdown of regular services. Other airports reported severely reduced schedules or complete cessation of passenger service.
The strike is related to two separate pay disputes: ongoing negotiations for a new contract for airport security workers, and a broader dispute concerning federal and municipal government employees. The latter has already caused walkouts at several airports. While negotiations for the government employees are set to resume on Friday, talks for airport security workers are scheduled for March 26. The union described the strike as a “warning strike,” a common tactic in German labor negotiations.
