**Washington, D.C.** – Daylight Saving Time (DST) returns on Sunday, March 9th, 2025, at 2 a.m., meaning most Americans will lose an hour of sleep as clocks “spring forward.” While the change brings longer daylight hours and warmer weather, the debate over the annual time shift continues.
The shift to DST coincides roughly with the arrival of spring, with the astronomical spring equinox occurring on March 20th. However, not all parts of the U.S. observe DST. Hawaii, Arizona (excluding the Navajo Nation), American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands remain on standard time year-round.
The practice of DST itself remains a point of contention. Former President Donald Trump, in a recent social media post, reiterated his support for ending DST permanently, calling it “inconvenient and very costly.” While this would eliminate the biannual time changes, it would also mean enduring significantly earlier sunsets during winter months. The Republican Party has pledged to work towards eliminating DST, despite a segment of the population that supports its continuation. Any such change would require Congressional action.
