Mon Mar 10 11:27:22 UTC 2025: ## Kannada Actress Alleges Verbal Torture After Gold Smuggling Arrest

**Bengaluru, India –** Kannada actress Ranya Rao, arrested last week for smuggling gold bars worth Rs 14.56 crore (approximately $1.77 million USD), has alleged verbal torture and threats during her detention by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). Appearing before a special court in Bengaluru on Monday, a visibly distraught Rao denied physical abuse but stated she was emotionally traumatized by her ordeal.

Rao’s claims follow speculation of assault sparked by a widely circulated photograph showing her with swollen eyes and facial bruises. The DRI, however, refutes the allegations, asserting that the entire arrest and interrogation process was recorded on CCTV. The Karnataka State Commission for Women has stated that an investigation into potential assault cannot proceed without a formal complaint.

The actress, stepdaughter of a senior IPS officer Ramachandra Rao, was apprehended at Kempegowda International Airport on March 3 upon her arrival from Dubai. Authorities seized 14.2 kg of gold bars. Subsequent raids on Rao’s residence uncovered additional gold jewelry worth over Rs 2 crore and Rs 2.67 crore in cash. A leaked statement reveals Rao admitted to possessing 17 gold bars and detailed her frequent international travel.

Two associates, T Raj and Tarun Kondaraju, are also in custody in connection with the case. Rao’s stepfather, Ramachandra Rao, has publicly denied any involvement and expressed shock and devastation over the situation. He claims to have had limited contact with his stepdaughter since her marriage four months ago.

Rao remains in judicial custody until March 24, with a bail hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
