Egede’s comments, made to Danish public radio on Monday, followed Trump’s recent reiteration to the US Congress of his desire to obtain the Arctic island for national security reasons. Trump stated his belief that the US would acquire Greenland “one way or the other,” a comment met with laughter from some Republican congressmen – a reaction perceived as disrespectful by many Greenlanders.
