**Belagavi, Karnataka – March 10, 2025** – A gynaecologist has urged for increased awareness regarding breast and cervical cancer in India, citing a rise in cases. Speaking at a lecture organized by Karnatak College and the Women Doctors Wing of the Indian Medical Association in Dharwad on Sunday, Dr. Komal Kulkarni highlighted the alarming statistics.
Dr. Kulkarni stated that cervical cancer constitutes a significant 27% of all female cancers in India, while globally, the figure is even higher at 73%. She detailed the risk factors associated with cervical cancer, including early sexual activity, smoking, tobacco use, contraceptive use, and HPV infection. However, she also offered a message of hope, emphasizing the availability of effective HPV vaccines to prevent the disease. Girls aged 9-14 require two doses, while women aged 15-45 need three.
The lecture, part of International Women’s Day celebrations, also stressed the importance of open communication about women’s health concerns. Hostel welfare officer S. Annapurna encouraged women to share health issues with loved ones to avoid potential complications stemming from delayed treatment. The event underscored the urgent need for public health initiatives to educate and empower women to proactively address their health.
